Election years are always a busy time at Anderson Robbins Research. With the Iowa Caucus happening this Monday, it is especially hectic. So, when preparing to write my weekly post about Millennials in the media this week, naturally politics came to mind.

One story that caught my eye was by Amanda Fiscina of NewsDay. The article centers around the recent statement by Democratic National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, in which she discussed Millennials saying she has observed a “complacency among this generation of women”. Unfortunately, for Millennials of both genders, the numbers back up what Schultz said. A lowly 21% of Millennials voted in the most recent mid-term elections, a 24-point and 30-point drop from the 2012 and 2008 elections, respectively. Given these statistics, it is not surprising that half of Millennials describe themselves as independent, which Pew Research Center says is the highest level of political disaffiliation for any generation in the history of their polling. Will this generational trend impact the primaries and general election this year? Only time will tell.
